Castles In the Sand..... Exploring the Athabasca Sand Dunes
In the northeast corner of Saskatchewan, along the south shore of Lake Athabasca is an area unique to North America. The Athabasca Sand Dunes boasts the largest area of sand dunes in North America and the biggest sand dunes in North America. You'll think you've somehow ended up in northern Africa. It was a long float plane ride. Hmmm..
Because this area is so unique and so fragile, the Saskatchewan Government preserved it as a Wilderness Park. On this wilderness trip you'll get to hike through an area that is pretty amazing! You'll get to stand on top of the biggest sand dunes on the continent. You'll see plants that only grow here. You'll understand why the Athabasca Sand Dunes Wilderness Area is being protected.
The group will meet at Churchill River Canoe Outfitters in Missinipe. After a long float plane ride to Thomson Bay on Lake Athabasca you'll set up a base camp on what certainly is the longest sand beach in the province. The group will spend several days hiking and exploring the dunes. Then the float plane to take you back to Missinipe.
Day 0: Arrive at Churchill River Canoe Outfitters in Missinipe,
Saskatchewan. We have a cabin available for you this night. Your guide will
meet with you to discuss the trip.
Day 1: After breakfast you would head for Osprey Wings to board a float
plane and begin your flight to the sand dunes and Lake Athabasca. It is
awesome to see the thousands of lakes of northern Saskatchewan from the
air. This is one of the highlights of the trip. Once arriving you'll set up camp
and start exploring.
Day 2 to 4:
These days will be spent exploring different areas of the sand dunes. One day
you may get to hike to the largest sand dunes. Another day to the petrified
forest. And the other day possibly to some of the other special regions of the area.
Day 5:
The float plane will arrive in the early morning to return you to Missinipe and Churchill River Canoe Outfitters. We have a
cabin available for you again this night. You'll have a celebratory meal together this evening.
